Australia risks losing thousands of fee-paying university students from India after dumping the 457 visa - and more than 32,000 could study elsewhere

  • As of March 2016, there were 51,809 full fee-paying Indian student enrolments
  • Of these, 32,336 students were enrolled to study at a university in Australia
  • Would particularly affect students seeking degrees in the 200 professions the government is removing from the list of those eligible for skilled worker visas
  • India has also warned it could also affect trade between the two countries
  • A quarter of 457 visa holders in Australia are Indian, the highest of any nation
